Stages of School Breaks

By Ashley Paskill on January 7, 2018

School breaks can be a much-needed escape from the stress and chaos from school. However, after a while, we start to miss the routine and structure to school and everything that comes with it. There are stages to breaks. Which one are you at now?

1. Relief

The semester can get super crazy and busy, with homework, student organizations, jobs, and internships. While students know that these are all important for our careers, it can be overwhelming at times and we are in need of a break. Going home to family means having parents around to help us out and cook and do laundry (maybe). We finally have time to relax and catch up on Netflix- that is, without feeling guilty for slacking on assignments. The stress of everything melts away before our eyes.

2. Boredom

Our hometowns are only exciting for so long, especially if they are small towns and we go to college in a big city. After a week or so, we have already seen who we have wanted to see and done what we have wanted to do. We have binged watched everything on TV and Netflix and have caught up on sleep. While we could do something productive, we want to hold off. We begin to miss school or long to be with our college friends again.

3. Annoyance

At some point, we get tired of our families nagging us about every single thing, especially on holiday breaks. “What are your plans after graduation? Why are you still single? When are you moving out? Get a job!” These questions and statements are repeated like a broken record and we may not have the answers to these. Although you know that you are making progress towards our futures, these questions can hurt and be annoying because our families do not necessarily see everything we are doing.

4. Readiness

In the last week or two of break, we finally hear from professors about upcoming semester, and we look forward to all the next semester holds for us. We get syllabi and get a head start on reading for the semester if possible. As stressed as we are during the semester, we miss the structure and productivity that comes with school. Being at home can be boring and tedious, especially after we get used to the freedom of being on our own and school and constantly having things to do.
